wide association studies

Crown Research Institute Scion is committed to enhancing the environmental and economic transformation of New Zealand, working toward a more sustainable, bio-based future. With more than 60 years of heritage in forestry science, Scion today demonstrates national leadership, world-class innovation and excellence in research and development.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop your career in statistical genetics in the exciting era of rapidly expanding high throughput genomic data. Participation includes publications in refereed scientific journals, interacting and developing contacts in the New Zealand the gene mapping community, and you will receive guidance from VISG statisticians, the project governance group including leading international geneticists, Crown Research Institutes and private companies.

As a project statistician, reporting to the lead statistician, you will participate in a team of statisticians developing experimental designs for genome wide association studies. You will collaborate with project statisticians and geneticists to produce prototype experimental designs and develop software relevant to end user needs. You will have the opportunity to work towards a postgraduate qualification co supervised by academic staff at a participating New Zealand University.

Ideally you will hold a recent BSc(Hons), Masters or PhD level qualification in statistics or mathematics; or a track record of relevant publications.  Experience or interest in experimental design and Bayesian statistical methods would be advantageous along with the ability to communicate with end users.  Fluency in one or more computer languages (preferably R) and knowledge and/or experience in probability theory, experimental design in a linux/unix computing environment would also be favourable.

Scion is proud to offer talented and motivated individuals the unique opportunity to pursue a fulfilling professional career.
